What Is an Email Alias? A Plain-English Guide
What an email alias is, how aliases differ from extra inboxes, and how to use them to protect your real address from spam, leaks and trackers.
The short answer
An email alias is an alternative address that delivers to an inbox you already own. When someone writes to the alias, the message is passed along to your real mailbox. The sender never learns your actual address. Think of it as a forwarding address for your digital life: post still reaches you, but nobody gets the keys to your front door.
That one property (receiving mail without revealing your real address) turns out to be surprisingly powerful. It lets you hand out a different address to every shop, newsletter and app, and later change your mind about any of them without touching the others. Your real address stays private, which means it stays clean.
An alias is not a second inbox
People often confuse aliases with having multiple email accounts. A second account is a whole separate mailbox: separate login, separate password, separate place you have to remember to check. Most people who try juggling two or three accounts give up within months because the overhead is real.

Why bother? Three problems aliases solve
First, spam control. When every service gets its own alias, unwanted mail is trivially traceable and trivially stoppable: turn off the alias and that entire stream of mail ends, forever, without a single unsubscribe form.
Second, leak detection. If mail addressed to the alias you gave only to one particular shop starts arriving from strangers, you know exactly who leaked, sold or lost your address. No guessing, no forensic work: the alias itself is the evidence.
Third, blast-radius reduction. Your email address is the master key to your online identity: it is the username on most of your accounts and the destination for every password-reset link. Attackers who obtain your address from one breach immediately try it everywhere else. When every account uses a different address, that technique (called credential stuffing) mostly stops working against you.
How aliases work under the hood
Mechanically, an alias is a forwarding rule that lives at a mail server. The server accepts messages for the alias address, optionally applies filtering, then relays them to your true destination. Good alias services rewrite things carefully so that replies also route back through the alias, meaning you can answer a message without your real address appearing in the reply headers.
The best setups are catch-all by design: any address at your personal subdomain works without being created first. Write shop@you.example on a paper form, and the moment mail arrives there, the alias exists. Zero setup at the moment you need it most: when you are standing at a till or halfway through a checkout page.

The habit that makes aliases effortless is naming each one after the service it belongs to. The address becomes self-documenting: you can tell at a glance where any message came from and who to blame when it goes wrong.
For example, with a catch-all subdomain the pattern looks like this:
- Name the alias after the counterparty, not the topic: 'amazon@' beats 'shopping@'
- Prefix throwaways with something like 'tmp-' so future-you knows they're disposable
- Never reuse an alias across two services, or you lose the traceability

Honesty matters: aliases are not a full anonymity tool. The alias provider necessarily sees your mail in transit, so choose one you trust and read its retention policy. A few badly-built websites also reject addresses on unfamiliar domains, though this has become rare. And an alias protects your address, not your name. If you type your real name into a form, the alias cannot unsend it.
Aliases also do not encrypt anything. For genuinely sensitive correspondence you still want end-to-end encryption on top. Think of aliases as compartmentalisation (the practice of keeping identities separate) rather than secrecy.
